Embarrassing Moments

153 fiction words, 411 total words

I just realized I don’t know a family member’s last name. Mortifying. Easily fixed, though, by admitting I’m a derp and forgetful. It could be I never was told, to be honest, but why haven’t I asked before now? Well, it’s fixed now.

I finally finished up and published the previously unnamed short story I mentioned editing yesterday. I did that, got the cover done, and got it up for sale this morning. It’s listed under a pen name, so it’s advertised elsewhere.

The words I wrote on my current story, still unnamed, were minimal and written on my phone in bed. It’s a good way to assuage some guilt for not having written during the waking hours, to be honest. And I shouldn’t feel guilty because I did all the publishing work I should have done two months ago. It’s hard to write new material and publish at the same time. Publishing kind of needs all of my attention to be done correctly.

Next time something needs to be published, since I’ve already fallen off my “Write Every Day” wagon for the year several times, I’m just going to take the writing time off. Publication, except for the print proof, only takes a day or so of intense work. Maybe schedule a day or two of vacation to get it done because those are fabulous days to publish things.

And the bright side is if I use enough vacation days to publish stuff that I run out, I’m on the right track for making this my full-time gig!

Ha ha!

All the things!

Okay, not all the things, but a lot of the things.

I finally made the time to publish A Brief History yesterday, as I may have mentioned in yesterday’s post. (You also may have seen the book post I did. Spoilers, huh?)

I published the Create Space version first. Then I went and published the Kindle version, except apparently I quite forgot to run some sections through Grammarly, because there were 14 spelling errors, and nine of those were valid errors. So I fixed those in all the different manuscript versions (there are three), finished publishing the Kindle version, then went back and submitted the Create Space version again, which means a 24-hour wait for that to get approved.

Oops.

Then, I went off to Smashwords and got everything all ready before I realized I needed to create another Ghost Author account. So I did that, then redid all the work I’d lost (it’s not much – Smashwords is so very easy once you’ve got the formatting down).

Finally, Nook Press (Barnes & Noble). So for a while, I was publishing ebooks over there but with Space Cats, I just did the print. But then when I was fixing links on the Space Cats post, I realized both the ebook and the print book were showing up on BN.com. Turns out it must be that my Smashwords copy is linking with the print copy I did over there. That’s really great, actually, and saves me a bit of work. BN is already a pain because I need to reformat both my interior files and my cover files because their paper is a teeny bit lighter than Create Space.

After that, I didn’t have the energy to write much, but I did hack out a few words before and in bed.

Most of those words being the A Brief History post. And now that it’s up for sale, I need to decide whether I update every A to Z post with the book links, or whether I remove the posts altogether. I actually need opinions on that, for whoever reads this far. I’ll probably ask on FB too, so if you see that, don’t feel like you need to reply twice.

Thanks for reading! Today is editing on 003 (still has no title – tsk) so I can get that up for sale, too. It’s been too long. Bad Nicki.

Titles R Hard

I’m starting with words written during Insurgent last night. Now that it’s out of the way, I can ask a question that just popped into my head.

Getting the paperback ready takes longer. Why do I try to get that first when I could get the ebook up for sale and the print book could follow when I have it done? I suppose it’s to get my skills with print books down so print books are easier to do, and then everything could go up at the same time? I don’t know.

I’m talking about A Brief History right now, by the way. It’s been so long since April, I’m honestly not certain what state things are in. Maybe everything is perfect and ready and just need a quick once-over before putting up for sale? Or maybe there’s quite a bit of work yet to do. I just don’t remember.

This is why I shouldn’t wait so long after finishing before publishing. Ugh. I’m not even sure why it didn’t happen immediately. I’ve been carrying around the proof copy since it arrived, ready to do the proofing.

Oh well. I’m going to get it done now. Or at least look at it for the next three and a half hours or so. Then I’ll give the laptop back to the kids if they want it.

I’m off.

A day for rest

273 fiction words, 687 total words, 4 hours on publication

Greetings and salutations, folks! I’m having a nice, relaxing day with my son watching Hermitcraft live streams on Twitch and Beam. We started with Xisuma, where he responded to Elder Youth’s comment in the stream (cue fangirl moment here), and EY actually thought it was pretty good advice. Sometimes all you need to do is hear something from your idol to make it sink in. <3

I should talk about yesterday, though, when I had a bunch of time to get things done while doing laundry, and I did! I spent a vulgar amount of time on some cover art and on trying to self-publish Space Cats in print on NookPress. It was awesome, and not as hard as I thought. In other ways, though, it was harder. Why can the different publishing systems not have the same requirements? I don’t know. At any rate, I have another proof copy ordered.

Now, I should mention that Space Cats is up for sale (and available for purchase)! Unfortunately, the print and Kindle versions aren’t linked yet, so I was waiting for that to happen before I put up the big BUY MY BOOK HERE page, but now I think I just need to get it done. I can add links as they show up.

It’s hard to get it all done and appearing at once, you know? Kind of like cooking Thanksgiving dinner. I don’t know how my mom manages it. To get the turkey and stuffing and mashed potatoes and corn and crescent rolls all out of the kitchen and on the table at the same time? Yeah, it’s a lot like trying to publish on Smashwords and Amazon and CreateSpace and NookPress all at once. Everything has different turnaround times, and formatting, and print proofs, and yeah. It’s a mess I’ll have to get some practice with, definitely.

So yes, I should mention I wrote 273 fiction words yesterday, with 687 total words and 4 hours on publication. And that’s all I have for today! I hope everyone is having a lovely, relaxing, cool spring day. I hope the cool weather sticks around, actually. This is the perfect temperature today for me. Much loves.

Busy day done

38 fiction words, 273 total words, 2 hours on publication

Getting only 38 fiction words written means I spent most of what little free time I had yesterday evening (two hours) on publication – yay!

Because yesterday, amongst the activities, I got my second proof copy of Space Cats in the mail and got a chance to find that one thing that’s going to drive me nuts. I fixed it, resubmitted it, and as soon as it gets through the file review process, I’ll get it up for sale in print and ebook.

I also took a few minutes to finish up the interior of A Brief History and get the cover layout set up with all my guides. I’m particular, so I like to have the document set up with fun little blue lines that indicate where the bleed is, and then where a quarter inch in from the cut line is so I can make sure the design that needs to fit on the page fits in nicely.

It turns out that the print version of this book is going to be a slender volume. I’m kind of excited about that. So far, The 27th Letter and Space Cats were both about the same length, thus the spines were about the same height (unsure if “height” is right here, but we’re going with it). This will be a MUCH narrower spine. It should be interesting!

I got 273 total words yesterday, and since so little of it was fiction (as mentioned previously) my blog got the bulk. It’ll be that way today, too, probably. Although I really need a nice writing session to fix this chapter I’ve been butchering. When I can only write a few new words at a time, it gets really choppy. I kind of need to redo the last 1,000 words or so to make them good and smooth, then keep going from there.

Some days it feels like my writing work ethic needs work, and other days I realize I’m trying to work a full-time job and raise kids and squeeze in writing in what’s left. I’m doing well for where my priorities need to be.

So today! It better be good because I don’t have the patience for crappy.

Another day down

440 fiction words, 682 total words, .25 hours on publication

Yesterday, despite a full day of laundry, went well for writing. 440 fiction words, 682 total words, .25 hours on publication. That tiny little quarter hour was me deciding that my time would be better spent on getting new words than trying to reformat A Brief History. I opened the file, messed around a bit, decided I could get more progress elsewhere, and that was it.

Today’s plan, since I only woke two hours ago and I’ve only had one full cup of coffee so far (this vanilla cappuccino K-cup does not count), is to catch up on some Hermitcraft Videos, get A Brief History taken care of, and actually read a bit today. I also wanted to run a couple errands, but I’m not sure how well that will work. It’s a holiday, after all.

Oh yes: Happy Mothers Day! Happy Mothers Day to traditional mothers of humans, Happy Mothers Day to mothers of furry family, Happy Mothers Day to mothers who have babies in their hearts. Much love to you all. Also, I kind of feel like fathers who are mothers to their children should get a Happy Mothers Day wish as well, whether they are parenting alone or whatever.

Urm…I think that’s it for now. Off to the plan, which I have already forgotten. Good thing I wrote it down.

Morning is broken

55 fiction words, 402 total words, .5 hours on publication

Maybe that’s not how the song goes? Meh, it’s fine.

Yesterday was awesome in that I got the proof copy for Space Cats. I found lots of mistakes, so I’m going to go through and fix all the things, and then set it out into the world. I’ve done this before, so hopefully, one swipe will do it. Inevitably something else will slip through, but I can only fret about it so much before it’s unproductive.

The cover, though. So adorbs!

I got a little bit of formatting done for A Brief History, but with Tuesday and everything, not a ton got done.

We are also entering Concert Season, and with that comes Anxiety. I spent a good chunk of last night preparing for today, making a list of all the things that need to happen and by when so I feel organized and can see that yeah, things really are going to be fine and I can worry a little less. It helps to a degree, but there’s still some nerves floating that we won’t make an appointment, or not everyone will find seats. I know it will be fine, but that doesn’t stop me from worrying about it.

So with all that, I wrote a little bit (55 fiction words, 402 total words, .5 hours on publication), but not all that much. Just enough to keep a streak going, think about my characters, worry that I’m not describing enough, that kind of thing. When life settles a bit I’ll probably take another swipe through and see if I can work on those things without sacrificing the pacing I’ve already established.

Nothing is going as quickly as I want, with writing or publishing. I don’t know whether to beat myself up for not trying hard enough or to acknowledge that I’m a Writer (Starter Edition) with a family and a full-time office job and that I need to cut myself a little slack (but not too much). I suspect it’s the latter, but the former is so easy.

Still not published, but writing

450 fiction words, 764 total words, 1.5 hours formatting

I wasn’t going to start writing until I got Space Cats published, but then yesterday I found myself with some free time and only the writing computer available for use, so I started writing something that got started on Facebook. It’ll be fun, but I need to flush out a lot of the details. Even what I wrote yesterday will need a complete overhaul.

But in a good way, you know?

So yesterday was 450 fiction words, 764 total words, and 1.5 hours of formatting. Today will probably be similar if I can stay away from an overdose of Minecraft.

Should be easy.

What got done

283 fiction words, 610 total words, 2 hours toward publishing

Good morning! I hope everyone is going to have a great day.

Yesterday was pretty awesome. I got quite a bit done, both in writing and other things. I got 001 edited almost to the point of completion (I have one outstanding set of edits to look at, I think), I got some cover blurbage and keywords done, and I may have e-cover art done (still trying to determine whether it’s too cheesy or just cheesy enough).

So that was two hours towards publication (the edit finishes only took 10 minutes, so I decided to choose a different thing to track). And I managed 283 fiction words, with 610 words total. Not bad at all!

I will have to schedule an entire week like yesterday soon, hopefully, where I can just sit around and write all day with a side of housework thrown in to alleviate any guilt that might creep in for having a week off.
