More things to track!

Math does not come naturally to me, but I do love me some spreadsheets and formulas to automatically calculate fabulousness.

For example. In my word tracking spreadsheet, I type in my words written for this blog in one cell and fiction in another. =SUM automatically calculates how many words I’ve written for the day. =SUBTOTAL calculates the cumulative words for the blog, fiction, and daily totals, as well as counts how many days I’ve written (I add comments about the day in a notes column).

=SUM gets me weekly totals as well. =ABS gets me the difference in words written from one week to the next. =AVERAGE is calculating the average total words I write per day, and also my average fiction words.

=RANK ranks my weekly totals, so at a glance, I can find my most productive week of the year.

I love my spreadsheets.

Yesterday I wrote 879 words of fiction. 242 words fell onto this blog. I’ve written 10 days in a row, and 11,152 words total. My average daily word count is 1,115, and my average fiction daily word count is 804.The week is ranked number two, so far, but really that’s not saying much as week one was one day (January 1st, because my weeks start on Mondays), and the number of words for week one were low (483), making it an easy target to beat.

I’m going to continue working on today’s words. I managed to haul myself out of bed at my desired time of 5 a.m., and it has paid off. I look forward to making good progress today and bringing up my average daily count.

  1. I don’t do all the stats (believe it or not), although I do track things, mostly.

    One of my goals this year is to figure out how to do pivot tables, not for word counts, but for book sale information.

      1. My understanding is that using pivot tables, I can enter the data in one format, then use the table to compare how books are selling by month or by vendor or whatever. I’m just clueless on how to set them up — yet.
